myQ Wi-Fi Network Requirements and Router Settings

This article explains the network requirements for myQ products and provides recommended router settings if you are having trouble connecting or staying connected.

Before changing router settings, verify that your myQ device has a strong Wi-Fi signal. See How to Test the Wi-Fi Signal Strength in My Garage

Check These First (Most Common Fixes)

Before changing any router settings:

  • Restart your router (unplug for 30 seconds, then plug back in)
  • Restart your phone
  • Make sure you are close to your router during setup
  • Confirm the device has power (LED lights are on)
  • Turn OFF mobile data during setup
  • Try setup again in the myQ app

If the device still will not connect, continue below.

💡Tip: If you are not comfortable changing router settings, contact your internet provider or router manufacturer for help. See When to Contact Your Internet Service Provider (ISP)

Understand Your Wi-Fi

Your Wi-Fi Network Must Be Visible

Your Wi‑Fi network must appear in your device’s network list to allow connection.

What this means: A visible network shows up when you view available Wi‑Fi networks.
A hidden network does not appear and can cause connection issues.

How to check

    1. Open Wi‑Fi settings on your phone
    2. Look for your home network name
If you see it, no changes are needed.

2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is required

Most myQ garage door openers and hubs only work with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

What this means:  Wi-Fi often comes in two “bands”:

  • 2.4 GHz → longer range, works with myQ devices
  • 5 GHz → faster, but not compatible with most myQ garage devices

How to check your Wi-Fi

Option 1: You see multiple Wi-Fi names

Look for something like:

    • HomeWiFi_2.4 → use this one
    • HomeWiFi_5G → do not use this one

Option 2: You only see one Wi-Fi name

This is very common.

It means your router is combining both bands into one network.

What to do:

    1. Open your router app
    2. Look for Wi-Fi settings or Wireless settings
    3. Find an option called:
      • Smart Connect
      • Band steering
      • Dual band
    4. Confirm 2.4 GHz is enabled

If you are unsure, your internet provider can help.

Stay Connected During Setup

For setup to work correctly:

  • Keep your phone connected to Wi-Fi (not cellular data)
  • Stay close to the router
  • Avoid switching networks during setup

Check Wi-Fi Signal Strength

A weak signal can prevent setup.

Good signal tips:

  • Stay in the same room as your router if possible
  • Avoid walls, metal objects, or appliances between devices
  • Move the router closer if needed

Basic Wi-Fi Settings

Network Visibility (SSID Broadcast)

Your Wi-Fi network must be visible.

What this means:  Your Wi-Fi name should appear in your device list.

How to check

  1. Open your router app
  2. Look for:
    1. SSID Broadcast
    2. Network visibility
  3. Make sure it is turned ON

Security Settings

What this means: This is your Wi‑Fi security type (password protection).

Recommended:

  • WPA3 Personal (best)
  • WPA2 Personal (acceptable)

Avoid:

  • WPA/WPA2 mixed modes
  • Enterprise networks (work or business setups)

Note: WPA2 Enterprise and WPA3 Enterprise settings are not compatible with myQ products. WPA3 Personal will work if the myQ device has been updated to the latest firmware.

Wi-Fi Channel

What this means: A Wi-Fi channel is like a lane on a road. Too much traffic in one lane can cause interference. Choosing a fixed lane helps your connection stay stable

Recommendation

Leave this setting on Auto.

Only change it if:

  • Setup repeatedly fails
  • Device keeps disconnecting

If changing manually, use:

  • Channel 1
  • Channel 6
  • Channel 11

Advanced Network Settings

DHCP (Must Be ON)

DHCP allows your router to assign a LAN IP address to your myQ device.

Make sure it is enabled.

Wireless Mode

Your router should support:

  • 802.11 b/g/n

Avoid:

  • 802.11ac-only mode

MAC Address Filtering

If you have your router's MAC address filtering enabled, it may block myQ devices.

If enabled:

  • Turn it off OR
  • Add your myQ device to the allowed list

Required Port (Port 8883)

Some networks block device communication.

If your device connects to Wi-Fi but not the app:

  • Contact your internet provider
  • Ask them to allow port 8883

Verify inbound and outbound TCP port 8883 is open. Verify the port is not being blocked by your router or a firewall product. Not having this port open will cause the myQ Wi-Fi device to not connect to the server.

Note: User modified routers using an open-source firmware (such as DD-WRT, OpenWRT, etc.) have not been tested with myQ devices. While some of these open-source versions may work with myQ devices, compatibility is unknown.
