Functions of the Learn/Program Button on a Garage Door Opener

The Learn/Program button on residential garage door openers is used to program various accessories, clear the opener's/operator's memory, set travel and force adjustments, and depending on your model enable Wi-Fi programming.

Below is a table outlining the possible functions on your operator. The top row outlines all of the available functions and the second row shows the required number of presses to enter this function. Note that the number of presses assumes beginning from a default with no learn or adjustment LEDs lit. The times in each box indicates how long the opener will stay in that function before going back to default itself. "N/A" indicates the opener does not support that function.

Notes:

  • Openers with a GREEN, RED, ORANGE or PURPLE learn/program button stay in accessory programming mode the 30 seconds, after 30 seconds the learn/program LED will turn off.
  • Units with a YELLOW learn/program button stay in accessory programming mode for up to 3 minutes.
    • The first 30 seconds will program remote controls, keyless entry codes and myQ Devices
    • The remaining 150 seconds can only program myQ Devices.
  • If you are unsure if your opener is Wi-Fi capable, look for the Wi-Fi logo or Powered by myQ logo on your product. You may also locate your model number and reference your manual as steps on how to connect to a home network will be provided. You can locate your model number here: How to find a model number on a garage door opener?
  • RJOs (Residential Jackshaft Operators) with a yellow learn button which are NOT Wi-Fi compatible do not follow this convention and instead use the "Learn" button on the hard-wired wall control. RJO units with Wi-Fi will feature a Wi-Fi logo or Powered by myQ logo on the cover.
