How to Program a Remote Control to a Garage Door Opener

You can program a compatible Chamberlain or LiftMaster remote control to your garage door opener using several methods. The right method depends on your remote, opener, and wall-mounted door control.

Program Using the myQ App
Your opener has built-in Wi-Fi
Method 1

To identify a compatible Wi-Fi-enabled opener, look for a yellow or white Learn button, or a Wi-Fi or "Powered by myQ" logo.

  1. Open the myQ app.
  2. If your opener does not appear in the app, confirm it's connected to your myQ account first. See Wi-Fi Garage Door Opener | Setup & Connect to Wi-Fi.
  3. Tap Settings (gear icon) in the top-right corner.
  4. Tap Devices, then tap Add a New Device or the + icon.
  5. Tap Accessory, then tap Garage Door Remote.
  6. Select the garage door opener you want to pair with the remote.
  7. If your remote has a QR code, tap Start Scanning and follow the app instructions. If it doesn't, tap I Don't Have a QR Code and select your remote type.
  8. Tap Get Started to acknowledge that the garage door will enter Learn Mode, then follow the on-screen instructions to prepare your remote.
    Success: the garage door opener clicks and flashes, and a success screen appears in the app.

If These Steps Did Not Work:

  • Confirm the opener has built-in Wi-Fi and is connected to the myQ app.
  • If you have a Smart Garage Control or Hub, use the Garage Door Opener Learn Button method instead.
  • Repeat the programming steps.

  1. Locate the navigation button on the control panel.
  2. Use the navigation button to scroll to PROGRAM and select REMOTE.
    Success: the control panel enters programming mode.
  3. Press and hold the button on the remote you want to use.
  4. Release the button when the opener lights flash, or you hear two clicks.
    Success: the remote is now programmed.

  1. Find the Learn button on your wall-mounted door control.
  2. Press and release the Learn button twice.
    Success: the LED begins blinking.
  3. Within 30 seconds, press and hold the button on the remote you want to use.
    Success: the opener lights flash, or you hear two clicks.
    If not: confirm the LED was blinking before you started, then repeat the steps within the 30-second window.

Method 4

  2. Press and immediately release the Learn button.
    Success: the Learn button LED glows steadily.
  3. Within 30 seconds, press and hold the button on the remote you want to use.
    Success: the opener lights flash, or you hear two clicks.

  • Make sure the remote battery is installed correctly. Replace it if needed.
  • Confirm the remote is compatible with your opener using the Compatibility Tool.
