HomeLink | Pair Your Vehicle to a Chamberlain or LiftMaster Garage Door Opener

Pairing HomeLink allows you to open and close your garage using built-in buttons or controls in your vehicle instead of a handheld remote.

Because HomeLink programming varies by vehicle manufacturer, model year, and HomeLink version, some vehicles may require additional steps during setup.

This guide explains how to connect your car to your garage door opener using HomeLink.

Before You Begin

Before pairing HomeLink:

  • Park your vehicle outside the garage, facing the door.

  • Start your vehicle (some vehicles allow programming in accessory mode).
  • Make sure the garage area is clear of people and objects.
  • Have your working garage door remote control ready.
  • Verify the remote operates your garage door and identify the button that controls the door.

Pair HomeLink to Your Garage Door Opener

Step 1: Locate the HomeLink Buttons

HomeLink buttons are usually found in your vehicle and must be located before pairing.
Where to look:
  • Rearview mirror
  • Sun visor
  • Overhead console
  • Some vehicles display HomeLink controls through the infotainment system instead of physical buttons.
Tip: Look for the HomeLink icon on or near the buttons.
Note: Instructions may vary depending on your vehicle manufacturer.

Step 2: Test the HomeLink Buttons Before Programming

  1. Press and hold the HomeLink button you want to use to confirm its status.
    •  Slow flashing light means the button is ready to program.
    •  Rapid flashing light means the button is already programmed to a device. Reprogram or clear the button before continuing.

Important:
If the light flashes rapidly before starting, either:
• Use a different button, or
• Clear the button before continuing

Step 3: Start HomeLink Pairing

Complete these steps within 90 seconds for best results.

  1. Hold your remote 1-3 inches next to the HomeLink button.

    • Don't press any buttons yet.

Press and hold the desired HomeLink button until the indicator light flashes slowly.

While continuing to hold the HomeLink button, press and hold the garage door remote button.

      • Hold both buttons at the same time.

Continue holding both buttons until the HomeLink indicator light changes from a slow flash to a rapid flash.

    • This may take up to 20 seconds

When rapid flashing begins, release both HomeLink and the garage door remote buttons.

Step 4: Test the HomeLink Button

Press and hold the programmed HomeLink button for 2 seconds to complete programming.

    • If the garage door moves, programming is complete.
    • If the door does not move, repeat this step up to two more times.
      • It may take 2 to 3 attempts for the door to respond.

Reprogram or Clear HomeLink Buttons

If the HomeLink button you want to use is already programmed or the pairing process does not complete, you may need to reprogram or clear the button before trying again.

Reprogram a Single Button

Use this if the button you want to program is already programmed to another device.

  1. Reprogram the button: Press and hold the HomeLink button for about 20 seconds.

    • Wait for the indicator light to change to a slow flash. Do not release the HomeLink button yet.
  2. Sync with your remote: While still holding the button, press and hold your remote button.
    • Release both buttons when the light flashes rapidly.
  3. Confirm and finish: Complete programming. See above to Pair HomeLink to Your Garage Door.

Clear All HomeLink Buttons

Use this option if you need to remove all existing HomeLink programming from your vehicle.

  1. Press and hold the first and third HomeLink buttons firmly at the same time.

  2. Continue holding until the indicator light flashes rapidly.
  3. Release both buttons
All HomeLink buttons are now cleared and are ready for programming.

Vehicles with Infotainment or External Sensors

Some vehicles require a different setup method.

Infotainment Systems

Some vehicles use the infotainment screen to complete pairing.

• Follow the on-screen prompts in your vehicle
• The name of vehicle pairing may vary. Look under Settings.
• Refer to your vehicle owner's or manual if needed or online videos.

HomeLink Sensor in Bumper

Some vehicles have the HomeLink sensor located in the front or rear bumper.

(Primarily brands such as Audi, Porsche or Tesla)

  • Follow on-screen prompts to locate the sensor.
  • Hold the remote near the sensor location instead of inside the vehicle.
