How to Program a Remote Control to a Garage Door Opener

You can program most Chamberlain or LiftMaster garage door opener remotes in just a few minutes. Choose one of the four setup methods below.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have all of the necessary tools and information to make programing quick and easy. You'll need:

Clear the Area – Make sure nothing is blocking the garage door.
Find your Learn button – Locate the Learn button on your garage door opener. If unsure, refer to How to Find the Learn Button on My Garage Door Opener
Check Compatibility – Make sure your remote control is compatible with your garage door opener.
Have a Ladder Ready – If the Learn button is on the garage door opener unit, you may need a ladder to access it.

Program Using a Door Control with a Learn Button

Press and hold the button on the remote control that you want to use to operate your garage door until:

Program Using an LCD Smart Control Panel

Locate the navigation button on the control panel, below MENU to view the Features menu.
Use the navigation buttons to scroll to PROGRAM and select REMOTE.
Press and hold the button on the remote control that you want to use to operate your garage door until:
- The garage door opener lights flash, or
- You hear two clicks.
Your remote control is now programmed.

Program Using the Garage Door Opener Learn Button

Find the learn button on the garage door opener.

- Use a ladder to reach the learn button and bring your remote up with you.

- For models 8500 or RJO20, use the learn button on the myQ Control Panel. See, Program Using a Door Control.
Press and immediately release the learn button. The Learn Button LED will glow steadily.
Within 30 seconds, press and hold the button on the remote control that you want to use to operate your garage door until:
- The garage door opener lights flash, or
- You hear two clicks.
Your remote is now programed.

Program Using the myQ App

If your garage door opener is Wi-Fi enabled, you can program your remote control through the myQ app.

Open the myQ app.
Access settings:
- If your app has a Gear Icon in the top right corner, tap the Gear Icon.
- If your app shows a plus (+) sign in the bottom right corner, tap the plus (+) sign.
Tap Devices, then tap Add a new device.
Tap Accessory.
Tap Remote Opener.
Select the Garage Door Opener you want to pair with the remote.
Tap Next.
Read the Safety Warning to acknowledge and understand your door will move during the process, then tap Get Started.
Identify and select your remote type.
Acknowledge that your garage door will go into learn mode. Tap Get Started.
Follow the on-screen instructions to prepare your remote.
When pairing is successful, the garage door opener will click and flash, and a success screen will appear in the app.

If your remote doesn't work:

Try repeating the steps carefully.
Make sure your remote battery is fresh.
Confirm that your remote is compatible with your garage door opener model.
Universal remote controls may require additional steps. If the remote is a model KLIK1U, 893MAX, or 953EV, different steps will be required to ensure the remote is sending out the correct frequency for the specific garage door opener. Consult the remote control's owner's manual for additional instructions.
