Why the Light Turns on When I Enter the Garage

Note: Any garage door opener manufactured after February 2022 will no longer have the light feature.

The light will turn on when someone enters the garage because of safety considerations. When the path of the safety reversing sensors is crossed, the opener light comes on, and stays on for a preset amount of time (default is 4-1/2 minutes).

A motion sensing door control will turn on the lights automatically when a person enters the garage. When a person walks in front of the door control, the door control detects the body heat, the light comes on for five minutes, then shuts off.

Safety Light Feature

Turn ON

  1. Close the garage door.
  2. Start with the garage door opener lights "ON".
  3. Press and hold the light button for 10 seconds. (Upon pressing the light button, the lights will immediately turn off and come on 10 seconds later.)

Turn OFF

  1. Close the garage door.
  2. Start with the garage door opener lights "OFF".
  3. Press and hold the light button for 10 seconds. (Upon pressing the light button, the lights will immediately turn on and go off 10 seconds later.)

Many garage door openers are compatible with a motion sensor door control (see your manual for compatibility). This sensor picks up body heat which allows the opener to activate the lights while you are in the garage.

Motion Sensor Light Feature

To turn the motion sensing feature On or Off, push the motion sensing switch or button on the door control.

If you have a motion sensor and your lights are staying on after you leave the garage:

  1. Locate the auto or OFF switch or button on the door control and turn the motion detector off.
  2. Close your garage door and wait 5 minutes.
  3. If your lights turn off, the sensor may be causing the light to stay on.
  4. If you have windows in the garage which allow sunlight or car lights to shine in the garage, this could also trigger the motion detector.
