Below are basic steps to activate or deactivate the garage door opener light feature or motion sensor feature.
Note: Any garage door opener or replacement logic board manufactured after February 3, 2022, will no longer have this feature.
A multi-function door control is necessary to control the lights, and also has additional functionality. If you do not have a multi-function door control and you want a new door control with additional functionality, see your manual to find the accessories available for your model.
The light feature turns on the garage door opener lights ON whenever motion is detected through the open garage doorway.
TIP: If you have a standard pushbutton door control and really want to have the lights stop turning on while you are doing yard work or cleaning the garage, you can open your door and before it is fully open, press the door control to stop the door from opening completely. This temporarily disables this feature until the next time the opener operates. Please close and open your garage door fully before entering or exiting the garage with your vehicle to assure door clearance and avoid possible damage.
The Motion Sensor is not available for all door controls. Take a look at your wall mounted door control and see if you have a motion sensor. The motion sensor on the door control will automatically turn the garage door opener lights on when a person walks in front of the door control. The lights stay on between 1-1/2 to 4-1/2 minutes, then shut off. The motion sensor works by detecting body heat using Passive Infrared motion sensing (PIR).
Deactivate the Motion Sensor: Press the motion sensing button or flip the switch on the side of the door control.
TIP: We recommend the motion sensor be disabled when using the opener lights as work lights. Otherwise the lights will turn off automatically if you are working beyond the sensor's range.
