Wireless Keypad | How to Change the Battery

If your wireless garage door keypad isn’t working, the battery may need to be replaced. Follow the steps below based on your keypad model to safely remove the battery cover and install a new battery.


Before You Begin

Check your model number – The model number is located on the back of the keypad or inside the battery compartment.
✅ Prepare a new 9V alkaline battery – Most keypads use a 9V battery. Use only a high-quality alkaline type.
✅ Have a small screwdriver ready – Some models require a Phillips or flat-head screwdriver to remove the cover.
 
⚠️ Warning: Use only alkaline batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries and dispose of used ones according to local regulations.

Find Your Keypad Model

Different keypad models have different battery replacement steps.

CH148, L979S, CH348/CH348C, L979M, R979M, CMX348, Q348LA, CHU48/CHU48C, L979U 

When the battery is low, the keypad LEDs may dim, stop flashing, or a low battery alert may appear in the myQ app. Follow these steps to replace the battery:

To replace the battery:

  1. Slide down the battery cover to remove it.
  2. Pull out the battery and disconnect it from the power leads.
  3. Connect the new 9V battery to the power leads.
  4. Place the battery inside the housing and slide up the cover until it clicks into place.
💡 Tip: Use only a high-quality 9V alkaline battery for best performance.

 

New Style keypads

940D, 940EV, 977LM, 377LM, 877LM, 877MAX, 878MAX 
  1. Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the oval cutout at the top of the battery cover.
  2. Apply pressure and slide down the cover.
  3. Remove the cover once it clears the locking tabs.
  4. Replace the old battery with a new 9V alkaline battery.
  5. Slide up the cover until it locks into place.

New Style keypads

740CB / 66LM (Older Style)
    1. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screw at the bottom of the keypad.
    2. Slide down the battery cover.
    3. Replace the old battery with a new 9V alkaline battery.
    4. Slide up the cover and tighten the screw.

    💡 Note: The cover may be tight and require firm pressure. It’s designed to be durable.

740cb 66lm battery cover

940CB, 976LM, 376LM (Pin Hole Style)
  1. Insert a small Phillips screwdriver into the pin hole at the bottom of the keypad cover.
  2. Gently pull outward while sliding down the cover to remove it.
  3. Replace the battery with a new 9V alkaline type.
  4. Slide up the cover to secure it.

💡 Tip: This style does not use screws.

940CB, 976LM and 376LM style keypad

After Replacing the Battery 

  • Test the keypad to make sure the cover is secure and the unit lights up when pressed.
  • Re-enter your PIN to confirm the keypad communicates with the garage door opener.
  • Dispose of old batteries properly according to local recycling regulations
