How to Troubleshoot Noise Issues with Garage Door Openers

There are a few issues that can cause the garage door and garage door opener to be noisy. Understand that the garage door is the largest door in the home so some noise is inevitable. Use the steps below to help you determine and resolve the noise issues you may be experiencing.

  1. With the door closed, pull the manual release and move the door by hand. It should move smoothly and be balanced. While moving the door, listen for any possible noise from the door. You may need to lubricate the door hinges and rollers. For more information, see: Does my garage door opener require any monthly or annual maintenance?
  2. With the door disconnected, run the opener with the remote or door control. Listen for any excessive noise from the opener. If the opener is noisy without the door, check the drive tension.
  3. If the door and the opener are quiet separately, review the installation of the opener. Make sure the header and door brackets are at the correct locations and that the opener is properly angled down away from the header above the door. Consult your owner's manual for proper installation of the opener. Locate your manual by entering the model number of your garage door opener in the search bar above.
  4. Though it is rare, many operators have internal gears that may need lubrication. To check this, unplug the opener and remove the side plastic panel to access the internal components. The plastic panel may have 3 to 4 screws holding in place. Inspect the gears for lubricant - they should have a good amount of white lithium grease on them.
  5. If the opener is excessively vibrating after ensuring proper door maintenance and drive tension, you may want to look in to installing either a vibration Reduction Kit (041A8420) or a Vibration Isolator (G89LM).
