Garage Door Only Travels a Little Way and Then Reverses

Your garage door opener is equipped with safety features that cause it to automatically reverse in the event that the garage door opener encounters resistance.

Note: If the lights are flashing 10 times when the door reverses, see Lights on garage door opener flash and door will not close. Any garage door opener or replacement logic board manufactured after February 3, 2022, will no longer have this feature.

Started at the end of 2020, Security+ 2.0 Garage Door Openers are manufactured with obstruction notifications in the event the garage door encounters an obstruction while operating.

  • For existing Security+ 2.0 Wi-Fi Garage Door Openers that are connected to Wi-Fi, the firmware has been updated automatically so the opener will now provide obstruction notifications. Note: The garage door opener had to be connected to Wi-Fi in order for the update to occur.
  • If the opener is not a Wi-Fi enabled Garage Door Opener and is within the warranty time frame, the logic board can be replaced. The replacement logic board will provide obstruction notifications once it is installed.
  • Obstruction Notification Types
    • If the door makes contact with an obstruction while opening, the door will stop, the opener will beep and the lights will flash five (5) times.
    • When the door is in any position other than closed and the garage door opener is activated, the door will close.
    • If the garage door makes contact with an obstruction while closing, the door will reverse, the opener will beep and the lights will flash 5 times.

    WARNING

To prevent SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH from a moving garage door:

    • ALWAYS keep remote controls out of reach of children. NEVER permit children to operate, or play with remote control transmitters.
    • Activate door ONLY when it can be seen clearly, is properly adjusted, and there are no obstructions to door travel.
    • ALWAYS keep the garage door in sight until completely closed. NEVER permit anyone to cross the path of the moving door.

A few factors can trigger this safety feature even if the door does not appear to be meeting any resistance or obstruction.

The garage door opener's force setting may not be set correctly

    • The force setting tells the opener how much resistance the door should provide, and if the opener detects more than is "allowed," the door will reverse. Check that the door manually operates correctly. See How to test the balance of a garage door for more help.

Garage Door Openers with an AC motor type

    • If you have recently replaced your garage door opener's gears, the shaft bearing kit may be interfering with a part of your RPM sensor assembly called the interrupter cup.
      • Make sure that the wire harness is plugged back into the RPM sensor and the interrupter cup is installed and seated all the way on the motor shaft so that the edge of the cup rotates through the RPM sensor.
      • The RPM sensor is a small 1 inch x 1 inch electronic circuit board with a 2 pronged black sensor. If the cup is not pushed onto the end of the shaft, it can cause the symptoms described.
    • The motor shaft moves back and forth through the motor more than 1/16th of an inch during operation, it could lead to the door traveling only a short distance before reversing.
      • Ensure the motor shaft is tightened enough so that there is not too much "endplay" in the shaft. Endplay is caused by a loose or improperly installed shaft bearing kit.
      1. Loosen the set screws on the shaft collar.
      2. Press firmly on the collar towards the motor.
      3. While applying pressure to the retaining ring tighten the set screws.
