Garage Door Won't Fully Open or Close

This guide helps you troubleshoot a garage door that starts moving but stops early or turns around before it finishes opening or closing.

Common Symptoms

You may notice one or more of the following issues:
  • The garage door opens only 6 to 12 inches and stops
  • The garage door closes partway, then reverses
  • The opener runs, but the door does not travel fully open or closed

Why This Happens

A garage door opener is designed to move a door that is already balanced and easy to lift. When something changes, the opener may stop or reverse to prevent damage or injury.
The most common reasons are:
  • The garage door is out of balance
  • The opener force settings are no longer correct
  • The opener thinks the door has hit resistance
  • The opener cannot tell how far the door has moved

Good news: most of these are fixable without replacing anything.

Step 1: Test the Garage Door Manually

  1. Pull the red emergency release handle to disconnect the opener from the door.
  2. Now try lifting and lowering the garage door by hand.

See: How to Manually Open or Close a Garage Door for detailed instructions.

What to check:

  • Door moves smoothly and stays in place → opener issue likely
  • Door feels heavy, sticks, or drops → door is out of balance
If the door does not move smoothly, the issue is likely with the door, not the opener. Review this guide for instructions on how to test door balance before continuing.

Step 2: Adjust force and travel settings

Force settings control how much pressure the opener uses to move the door. If the force is too low, the opener may think the door has hit something and stop or reverse.
Travel limits tell the opener how far the door should move when opening and closing. Incorrect travel limits can cause the door to stop early or reverse.

Follow the instructions that match your opener type:
Incorrect travel limits can cause the door to stop early or reverse.

Step 3: Run the Opener Without the Door Connected

    1. Keep the door disconnected from the opener.
    2. Run the opener and watch the trolley move along the rail.

    What this tells you:

    • If the trolley moves fully, the issue is likely with the door.
    • If the trolley still stops early, the issue is inside the opener.

    Check the Drive System

Loose or damaged parts can cause the opener to sense resistance.

Step 4: Check the LED Indicator Light

    Where to Find the LED

Most garage door openers have a small LED light on the motor unit. It is usually:
    • On the back or side of the opener
    • Near the Learn button or adjustment controls

    What to Do

The LED blinks in patterns called diagnostic codes. These codes help identify what the opener thinks is wrong.
    • If the LED blinks five times, complete all previous steps before continuing to inspect the RPM sensor.
    • If the LED is blinking any other number of times, use the diagnostic code guide to identify the issue.

Step 6: Inspect the RPM Sensor

    What the RPM Sensor Does

The RPM sensor tells the opener how fast and how far the motor is turning. This helps the opener know:
    • How far the door has traveled
    • When to stop opening or closing
    • When something is not moving correctly
If the opener cannot track movement, it may stop early or reverse even when nothing is blocking the door.

Where the RPM Sensor Is Located

    The RPM sensor is:
    • Inside the motor unit
    • Near the motor or circuit board
    • Behind the metal cover
It is usually a small plastic sensor connected by thin wires and positioned near a spinning wheel or shaft.

How to Inspect the RPM Sensor

    1. Unplug the opener.
    2. Remove the metal cover using the screws on the top and sides.
    3. Inspect the RPM sensor for damage, looseness, or debris.
In rare cases, the RPM sensor may need to be replaced. If replacing the sensor does not resolve the issue, the logic board may have failed.
