Do I Need to Reinforce My Garage Door?

Before installing your garage door opener, you must first check for proper vertical and horizontal support. Horizontal and vertical reinforcements are required to prevent damage to steel, aluminum, fiberglass, or glass-paneled doors. Some doors that are considered double-sided have reinforcement built into the interior of the door, when in doubt it is always best to add additional reinforcement.

Angle iron is commonly used for both types of reinforcement. Install a horizontal brace along the full width of the door, near the top. A vertical brace should extend the height of the top panel. If possible, attach the braces to each other for more support. Garage door reinforcement kits may be available through a dealer or hardware store. Check your owner's manual for more detailed instructions.
