Why does my garage door opener hum but the door does not move
Here are possible solutions to try when the garage door opener hums and the door does not move.
The following garage door openers will have different resolutions:
- Chain or belt drive openers.
- Screw drive openers.
- Wall-mounted openers.

| Brief Hum | The Springs May Be Broken | Contact a trained door technician |

| Hums for About 30 Seconds | The door may not be connected to the garage door opener | Depending on your opener, you may see only the trolley move along the rail when you activate the opener. Ensure the door is connected to the garage door opener. Use the emergency release handle to reconnect the door. Resolve Humming Issues for a Screw Drive Opener

| Hums Longer Than 5 Seconds | The rack may be stripped | Check the rack, a black piece that runs up and down the inside of the rail. If it is worn, replace it. |
| Brief Hum | Possible Capacitor Issue | Disconnect ALL power. Remove the opener cover and inspect the capacitor for oil or swelling. Replace the capacitor. |
| Hums After Capacitor Has Been Replaced | The motor is damaged | Replace the motor |

| Hums For 1 to 2 Seconds | The Door May Be Disengaged | Pull on the red emergency handle, manually disengage the door lock, then try opening door manually |
