How to Resolve a Close Error in the myQ App

Reasons for a Close Error in the myQ app

A close error means your garage door didn’t close as expected. Here’s why this might happen:

  • Something is blocking the safety sensors.
  • An object is in the way of the door.
  • The garage door didn’t close after two tries in the app.
  • Cold weather may have drained the sensor battery. Replace it when temperatures drop for the best performance.

Try This First

  • Use your wall control or remote to close the garage door.

    • If the door closes, the issue is resolved.

    • If not, continue troubleshooting.

Troubleshooting Steps to Clear the Error from the myQ App

Check for Obstructions

If the garage door won’t close using the myQ app, remote, or wall control and the opener’s lights don’t flash, the issue might be:

    • Something is blocking the door.
      • For newer Chamberlain or LiftMaster Security+ 2.0 models, the opener may beep, and the lights may flash five times to signal an obstruction.
    • A problem with the opener's settings or a technical issue.

What to Do

      1. Move any objects that may be in the way of the door.

      2. Check the trolley and rail for anything stuck that could prevent movement.

      3. Test the door again. If it still won't close, continue with the next steps.

    Check the Safety Sensors

If the door won't close using the remote or wall control and the lights on your garage door opener flash 10 times, there may be an issue with the safety sensors.

    How to Check

    1. Locate the sensors – They are at the bottom of both sides of the garage door.

    2.  Make sure the sensors are not blocked.

    3. Check the LED lights on the sensors to see if they're on or blinking. Follow these guides depending on what the lights are doing:
    1. Make sure the sensors are facing each other and aligned

    For Wi-Fi Hub Users

Check the Door Sensor Battery for the Wi-Fi Hub

If you have a myQ Garage, Smart Garage Hub or Smart Garage Control, a low battery can cause the sensor to not report the status of the door or report the incorrect status.

Check Hub and Door Sensor Mounting Location

If the hub is put in the wrong place, it might not work well with the garage door. Also, if the door sensor isn't put on the door correctly or falls off, it might not detect the right door position.

    • Make sure the hub is mounted in a spot that meets these requirements:

      • At least 6 feet above the ground.

      • Within 5 feet of an outlet.

      • Where the hub and light are visible at all times from inside the garage.

      • At least 4 feet away from any metal objects and the garage door when it's open.

    Hub mounting location

    • The door sensor should be mounted on the top panel of the garage door as shown in the image below:

Check for LED Light Bulb Interference

Some LED bulbs can send out radio waves that are the same frequency that garage door opener remotes use. These waves can mess up the signal from the Wi-Fi hub that controls the garage door opener.

    • To resolve issues with LED light bulb interference:

      1. Unplug the LED bulbs.

      2. Test to see if the door closes using the app or remote.

        • If the door closes, the light bulbs are the issue, replace the LED bulbs with a different brand, a CFL light bulb or incandescent light bulb.

    Further Troubleshooting

Test The Balance of the Garage Door

If the door is still not closing, testing the balance can help determine if there is a mechanical issue.

How to Manually Close the Door Before Disconnecting

If the door is stuck open and won't close, follow these steps:

    1. Ensure the area is clear of objects and people.

    2. Pull the emergency release handle (red cord) down and toward the opener to disengage the door from the opener.

    3. Manually lower the door slowly and carefully.

      • If the door is too heavy to close, seek professional assistance.

    Testing the Balance

      1. With the door disconnected from the opener, open and close the door by hand. The door should move easily.

        • If the door sticks or is hard to move, check the track for any objects in the way and lubricate the door track, rollers, and hinges.

        • If it's still sticking, contact a professional door technician for help.

      2. Lift the door 3-4 feet off the ground and let go.

        • If it stays in place, the balance is good.
        • If it slowly moves up or down, that’s okay.
        • If it slams shut or shoots up, the door is unbalanced—call a professional for help.
      3. After testing, reconnect the door to the opener.

        • Make sure your garage door is closed and pull the emergency release handle down and back towards the garage door opener to re-engage.
      Adjust Opener Settings

If the door is balanced and moving properly:

        • Adjust the force and travel settings on your garage door opener according to the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.
        • Test the safety reversal system by placing an object (like a piece of wood) under the door and making sure it reverses upon contact.

      Still Seeing the Close Error?

If the issue is resolved but the myQ app still shows the error:

      • Close out of the app completely and then reopen it to refresh the connection.
      • Try manually operating the door with the wall control or remote to reset the status.
      • Consider reinstalling the myQ app if the issue persists.
