Garage Door Activates on Its Own

In rare cases where the garage door opener seems to activate on its own, the issue could be human error or aging opener components, including:

A Neighbor's Remote Control was Inadvertently Programmed to the Opener

  1. Erase the memory of your garage door opener by pressing and holding the LEARN button for six (6) seconds.
  2. Reprogram your remote controls and keypads.

NOTE: If you have a Smart Control Panel® compatible with Security+ 2.0® Garage Door Openers you can view the number of remotes programmed in the opener using the Service menu on your Smart Control Panel. This is a quick way to determine if additional remotes were inadvertently programmed to the garage door opener prior to clearing memory. For steps to access the Service menu click: Service Bulletin 2011-13: Regarding the Maintenance Alert System (MAS)

NOTE: If your Security+ 2.0 Garage Door Opener is online, in the app under myQ diagnostics a count of programmed accessories is provided. (This is also viewable in Insight  under the Devices section of the customer's account dashboard.)

A Button Is Stuck on a Remote Control

  1. Check to see if the LED light by the LEARN button is continuously flashing fast. If it is flashing, this means that the opener is receiving a constant signal from a remote control.
  2. Remove the battery in your remote control(s) and check the LED(s). If the LED stops flashing when you remove the battery, this indicates this is the remote with the button that is stuck.

A Wall-Mounted Door Control Shorted and is Sending Unwanted Signals to the Garage Door Opener or Logic Board

If this problem persists after erasing the garage door opener's memory and you have confirmed that a button is not stuck on your remote control, you need to rule out your wall-mounted door control as the source of the problem.

  1. Remove the red and white wires for the wall-mounted door control from the back of the garage door opener's motor unit. These wires are located on the same side as the hanging antenna.
NOTE: DO NOT disconnect the wires for the safety reversing sensors.
  2. Wait a few days and if the problem occurs again, unplug the garage door opener when you need to leave the house.
    • If the opener activates on its own while the wall-mounted door control wires are disconnected, replace your receiver logic board.
    • If the opener does not activate on its own with the wall-mounted door control disconnected, proceed with the next step.
NOTE: If you have Security+ 2.0® Garage Door Opener and it does not activate on its own, replace the wall-mounted door control.
  3. Reattach the wall-mounted door control wires to the back of the garage door opener motor unit.
  4. Remove the wall-mounted door control wires from the back of the wall-mounted door control.
  5. Wait a few days and if the problem occurs again, unplug the garage door opener when you need to leave the house.
    • If the opener activates on its own, replace the wires to your wall-mounted door control.
    • If the opener does not activate on its own, replace your wall-mounted door control.
