Electrical Specifications for Garage Door Openers

All residential garage door openers manufactured for use in the United States and Canada are rated for 120V AC, 60Hz line power. You can find the voltage, hertz, and amps for your garage door opener on the label that has the model number to use with the below formulas.

Determine How Many Amps the System Uses

Use the following equation to determine how many watts or amps the system uses:

  • Voltage x Amps = Wattage
    • Example: 120 Volts x 2.9 amps = 348 watts
  • Wattage / Voltage = Amps
    • Example: 348 watts / 120 Volts = 2.9 amps
Note: The amp and wattage ratings above are measured with the garage door opener idle and with the lights off. For specifications on electrical output for when the garage door opener is under load from the garage door and in motion, contact a trained electrician as power may vary on different factors such as the type of door, bulb type/wattage, etc.
