Can I reuse the old rails and parts when installing a new garage door opener?

Although your new garage door opener may appear similar in design to your old opener, our recommendation is that you replace the entire opener. This includes mounting hardware, rails, wired door controls and wireless remote devices.

Why shouldn't I use old parts?

  • Replacing the old parts will save time. The most common reason for wanting to use old parts is to make the installation go faster. Trying to install a new opener using old parts takes longer, especially when installation errors occur.
  • If the manual is not followed step-by-step, you may encounter an installation error. You would need to call for troubleshooting before your opener works properly.
  • The design of current openers makes them much quieter. Older openers have "metal-on-metal" parts which should not be reused. Use "nylon-to-metal" construction instead.
  • If an opener that is using a combination of old and new parts fails, it may be more difficult to diagnose the cause.
