Remote controls and keypad only work when the opener lights turn off

There are three causes for the remote and keypad to only work when the opener lights turn off.

  • Light bulb
  • Door Control
  • Logic Board

Light bulb

To test the light bulb, unplug the garage door opener from the outlet and remove the light bulbs. Once the light bulbs are removed plug the unit back into the outlet and test the unit. If the problem goes away the light bulbs will have to be replaced. Customer may need to install regular A19 incandescent bulbs.

Door Control or Logic Board

  1. Unplug the garage door opener from the outlet.
  2. Remove the door control wires from the back of the motor unit.
  3. Plug the garage door opener back into the outlet.
  4. Clear out the memory. (Press and hold the learn button for 6 seconds)
  5. Reprogram the remote controls and keypad.
  6. Now test.
    • If the remotes and keypad work consistently, the door control needs to be replaced.
    • If the remotes and keypad still have the same problem the logic board will need to be replaced.
    • If the control panel has a "Light" button, turn the lights off and test the remotes. If the remotes work while the lights are off but will not work while the lights are on, the logic board will need to be replaced.

Note: This does not apply to garage door openers that use a work light which is separate from the garage door opener.
