How to Program MAX (L979M, CH348) and Universal (L979U, CHU48) Keypads to the STAR1000

Before You Begin

• Ensure the area around the door or gate is clear. The door or gate MAY MOVE during programming and verification.
• Read all instructions carefully before starting.
• Security+ 3.0 remotes and keypads are NOT recommended for use with the STAR1000 but CAN be programmed if necessary. For the best performance, LiftMaster recommends using only Security+2.0 Passport Lite Credentialed Remote Controls with the STAR1000.
• Keypads are pre-set to Security+3.0 out of the box. Because the STAR1000 is a Security+2.0 commercial receiver, you will need to put the keypad into Programming Mode to pair it.
• You may need the access code for programming. If you do not have the access code, follow instructions in the Star1000 manual to reset the receiver. 

Step 1: Put the Keypad in Programming Mode

1. Press and hold the 0 and 3 buttons simultaneously.
2. Continue holding until the LEDs remain solid, typically about 6 seconds, then release the buttons.
   • LED indicators by keypad type:
     • MAX Keypad (L979M, CH348): LEDs will be solid red.
     • UNIVERSAL Keypad (L979U, CHU48): LEDs will be solid blue.

Step 2: Program the Keypad to the STAR1000 

1. Enter the STAR Main Menu and select LEARN MENU. Press the soft button below OK.
2. Select LEARN DEVICE and press the soft button below OK.
3. The menu will instruct you to press the button on the device (the keypad). Enter your 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) and press the HOME button:
   • MAX Keypad: press the HOME button TWO TIMES
   • Universal Keypad: press the HOME button THREE TIMES
4. The STAR1000 will issue a SHORT BEEP and display the memory location where the keypad is LEARNed to.
5. The keypad LEDs will flash in transmission mode to finalize pairing:
   • MAX keypad: RED LEDs
   • Universal keypad: BLUE LEDs
   The STAR1000 will SHORT BEEP, and the menu will confirm the device is LEARNed. You will hear one LONG BEEP, and the keypad LEDs will turn off. Press the soft key below DONE and exit Menu Mode.

Step 3: Verify programming

1. Enter your 4-digit PIN and press HOME.
2. If programming was successful, the gate or door will move.
3. If the door or gate does not move, repeat programming steps.
