How to Troubleshoot a Door Control Panel

If your garage door control panel isn't working, this guide will help you troubleshoot and fix common issues, including problems after a power outage, unresponsive remotes, and wiring problems.

Before You Begin

  • New Installations: Press the door control button multiple times until the opener activates.

  • Remote: Your remotes may still work even if the door control panel doesn't.

  • Wiring Differences: Wire colors may vary based on whether your home was pre-wired.

  • Flashing Lights: If the lights on the garage door opener flash and the door won't close, the safety sensors may be obstructed.

  • Tools You May Need: Screwdriver, electrical wire, wire cutters, ladder.

Identify Your Garage Door Opener

Locate the Learn button on your opener to determine the type:

  • Yellow Learn Button – Security+ 2.0 Openers
  • Green, Red, Orange, Blue, or Purple Learn Button – Non-Security+ 2.0 Openers

How to Find the Learn Button

  • Look for an antenna wire hanging from the opener.

  • If the antenna wire is not visible, remove the light cover.

  • If you still can't see the antenna wire, check the side where the door control and safety sensor wires are connected to the opener.

For more details, see: Determine the Color of the Learn Button on Your Garage Door Opener

Proceed to the correct troubleshooting steps based on the color of the openers program button:

Garage Door Opener with a Yellow Learn Button (Security+ 2.0 Openers)
  1. Remove the Door Control Panel from the Wall
    • Lift up the push button which activates the garage door.
    • Remove the screw.
    • Slide the door control up and off the wall.
  2. Check the Wires
    • Make sure there is no excess wire connected to the screw terminals on the back of the door control panel. Any excess wire touching the circuit board could cause the door control to not work.
    • Trim wires to 7/16 inch if necessary and then reconnect without overtightening the screws.
    • If the door control LED or screen lights up, press the push bar a few times to test door control. If it works, you are all done.
      • If the door control does not work, continue to step 3.

  1. Remove the Wires from the Door Control and Opener
    • Remove the wires from the screw terminals on the door control panel.
    • Remove the wires from the Red & White screws or plug-in terminals on the opener.
    • Don't disconnect the wires for the safety reversing sensors.
    • Touching the wires on the 2-way encrypted serial door controls will not activate the opener.
  2. Connect Door Control with a Short Piece of Wire
    • Using an extra piece of wire, connect the door control directly to the back of the garage door opener.
    • Match Red to Red and White to White.
  3. Test the Door Control Panel
    • If the door control LED or screen lights up, replace the existing wires with 22-gauge bell wire.
    • If it still does not work, replace the door control panel. See the manual for a replacement part number.

Garage Door Opener with a Green, Red, Orange, Blue, and Purple Learn Button (Non- Security+ 2.0 Openers)
  1. Remove the Door Control Panel from the Wall
    • Depending on your type of door control, you may need to remove the push button which activates the garage door to remove the door control from the wall.
    • Unscrew the panel.
    • Slide the door control up and off the wall.
  2. Check the Wires
    • Make sure there is no excess wire connected to the screw terminals on the back of the door control panel. Any excess wire touching the circuit board could cause the door control to not work.
    • Trim wires to 7/16 inch if necessary and then reconnect to the terminals.
    • If the door control LED or screen lights up, press the push bar a few times to test door control. If it works, you are all done.

    • If the door control does not work, continue to step 3.

  1. Remove the Wires from the Door Control
    • Remove the wires from the screw terminals on the door control panel.
      • Note: The wires are low voltage wires and pose no risk of shock.
      • Don't disconnect the wires for the safety reversing sensors.
  2. Test by Touching the Ends of the Wires Together
    • If the opener moves- replace the door control panel.
    • If the opener does NOT move, proceed to step 5.
  3. Remove the Wires from the Opener
    • Remove the red and white wires for the door control panel from the back of the motor unit. These wires are located on the same side as the hanging antenna.
    • Note: Do not disconnect the wires for the safety sensors.
  4. Test with a Jumper Wire
    • Using a jumper wire make a connection between the red and white terminals on the motor unit.
    • If your opener moves using the jumper wire, replace the wires for the door control.
    • If your opener does not move using the jumper wire, replace your receiver logic board.
