Sun Light Interference with Safety Sensors

Sun light can cause interference with the safety sensors, causing the operator to act as if the sensors are blocked. The door will open but will not close and the lights blink 10 times when trying to close. This is caused by sun light shining into the receiving sensor (the one with the green LED), blocking the infrared light from the sending eye (amber LED).

One way to resolve this is to switch the sides of the door that the sensors are installed on. For example, if the receiving sensor is currently on the right side, you will need to move it to the left side and vice versa on the sending sensor.

Steps to switching safety sensors

  1. Disconnect power to the opener.
  2. Cut the wire about 6-12 inches back from the sensors or if they are spliced into existing wire, disconnect the wires.
  3. Remove the wing nut that holds the sensors in the bracket.
  4. Switch the sensors to the opposite sides of the door that they are installed on.
  5. Reconnect the wires, making sure to keep white with white and the black/white with black/white.
  6. Reconnect power and make sure the sensors are lit up, realign if needed.

If swapping the sides of the door that the sensors are installed on does not resolve the issue (sunlight will shine on the receiver sensor in the evening now, instead of the morning), we have sensor sun shields available for ordering, part number 41B873.
