How to replace the MVIS bushings

There are four rubber pads on the motor. The pads are the MVIS bushings. These pads prevent metal on metal contact. This greatly reduces noise when the motor runs.

  • Unplug the opener. If you take the cover off the motor head, hold the motor in both hands and try to rotate the motor. It should move a fraction of an inch. If the motor moves more, a rubber pad may have fallen out of place or one or more rubber pads are damaged.
  • The rubber pads can get dry and brittle over time. If they break, the motor rotates too much and can pull the wires off the connection points.
  • The four rubber pads can be replace and the customer can still reuse the motor. If the wires coming out of the motor are damaged, the AC motor has to be replaced.
  • Check the garage door for balance. The most common reason for damage to the rubber pads is the garage door is running on a door that is not properly balanced.

Steps to replace the MVIS bushings on the motor

  1. Unplug power from the operator.
  2. Remove the light lens, plastic end panels and metal cover. The end panels and cover can be removed with a ¼" nut driver. Unplug the logic board.
  3. Remove the travel module or limit switch and RPM sensor.
    1. For models with a travel module:
      1. Remove retainer clip from travel module.
      2. Unplug the wire harness from the travel module.
      3. Use a flat tip screwdriver and gently pry off the travel module from the motor bracket.
    2. For models with a limit switch:
      1. Remove the retainer clip and limit drive gear.
      2. Remove limit switch by pinching sides of it. Allow to hang from wires.
      3. Unplug the harness from the RPM sensor and remove RPM sensor.
  4. Disconnect the three leads to the motor. Remove the red and blue leads from the capacitor. Remove the white wire from the terminal block, note their location for reassembly.
  5. Remove the four screws holding the motor assembly to the chassis.
  6. Slide the motor assembly straight down off the gear and sprocket shaft.
  7. Remove the motor bracket by removing the three screws that hold it to the motor.
  8. Replace the 3 rubber bushings.
  9. Reassemble the opener by reversing steps 1-7.
