Important: To ensure the highest degree of safety and customer satisfaction, Chamberlain® and LiftMaster® believe it is important that garage door openers made before 1993 are replaced, as opposed to being repaired. This includes garage door openers that utilize dip switches for programming.
Chamberlain and LiftMaster are committed to the highest standards of product safety. We have manufactured garage door openers for over 40 years with a safety record that ranks as one of the best in the industry, producing long-lasting, popular products that are rigorously time-tested.
In the early 1990s, the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) enacted into law new rules with a focus on safety. These new rules ensured that all garage door openers manufactured after 1992 have external entrapment protection devices, such as infrared sensors, in addition to the internal contact reverse mechanism. Garage door openers made before 1993 are safe and reliable if properly installed, tested, and maintained, however, the majority of these older models are not equipped with infrared sensors or other external entrapment protection devices and do not meet today's standards for garage door opener safety.
As technology advances and safety standards change, we strive to respond with newer designs that are carefully engineered. This helps us to ensure that our products are reliable and perform as expected.
In 2008, Chamberlain and LiftMaster made the decision to stop supporting the repair of all pre-1993 garage door openers, including garage door openers with dip switches. We no longer provide technical service support and do not sell replacement parts for these products.
Whether it's a product you own or a product that you "inherit", safety is everyone's concern. Visit Chamberlain.com or LiftMaster.com and check out our latest products to replace unsupported garage door openers.
